Game of Thrones 4K reviewed, new title announcements, and a new Psycho BD/4K replacement disc update

Image
We’re working on more disc reviews here at the site today, but we do have a couple of things for you today… First up, on Monday night I was able to post my in-depth review of HBO’s Game of Thrones: The Complete Collection in 4K Ultra HD here at The Bits . It’s a very impressive set, I have to say. It’s not cheap, but if you’re a fan, it’s a better picture and sound upgrade than you might be expecting. You can see all the details for yourself here. Also, Dennis has turned in his thoughts on Lamont Johnson’s The Groundstar Conspiracy (1972), now available on Blu-ray from Kino Lorber Studio Classics. The Hal Roach Studios/Universal title stars George Peppard. In announcement news today, Acorn has set the BBC One thriller The Nest for DVD release on 11/17. [Read on here...] Uncork’d Entertainment has announced that Darcy Weir’s Sasquatch Among the Wildmen will arrive on DVD and Digital on 11/10. Meanwhile, RLJ Entertainment has announced their December slate, which will incl...

New 4K/BD reviews, They Live 4K, Blade 4K, Chernobyl 4K, new KL Studio Classics titles & a DUNE trailer

All right, it’s been a busy week here at The Bits so far and we’ve got a lot of ground to cover today. First of all, sorry for the lack of daily updates. The reason is three-fold. First, we’ve been working on reviews here at the website—more on that in a moment. Second, we had 110° heat here in SoCal this past weekend, with which our AC could not keep up. That meant my home theater was close to 90°, which made reviewing unpleasant, plus there was the danger of power outages. The good news is that we’ve made up for it since the heat broke—again, more on that in a moment. (The bad news is that our skies this afternoon are an unnatural shade of apocalyptic yellow-orange due to the California wildfires, but that’s neither here nor there.) The third reason is more complicated. We’ve been hearing from many of our readers based in the Netherlands that you’re unable to see The Bits website. The cause of this is that—apparently—a very large portion of the Internet’s DDoS attacks and cyber...

Bill & Ted 3 is “fresh” and now available, plus Arrow reveals Crash & King of New York 4K, as well as Silent Running & more on Blu-ray

Image
All right, we’ve got some interesting Blu-ray and 4K news for you today, but first... Bill & Ted Face the Music is now officially available via multiple digital/streaming services. Amazon currently has it on their Prime Video service for a $19.99 rental and a $24.99 digital purchase, both in full 4K (click here for that) . The good news is that Rotten Tomatoes shows an 82% “fresh” score this afternoon, and word I’ve heard from friends who have seen it is that it’s a worthy and enjoyable sequel. And I would expect nothing less from Dean Parisot, the director of Galaxy Quest . So great news indeed. Now then, our friends at Arrow Video have just announced their November slate of Blu-ray and 4K titles, and there are some good ones. For the US, Canada, and the UK, they’ve got Lake Michigan Monster and Burst City coming to Blu-ray (on November 2 and 9, respectively). For the US and Canada only, they have Silent Running coming to Blu-ray on November 17. Then for the UK only, th...

A quick update on the status of Warner’s forthcoming The Middle Earth 4K Ultra HD Collection

Image
As you can imagine, things are a little busy here at The Bits this week, and for good reason. As I mentioned yesterday, I’m continuing to dig pretty deep with studio and industry sources on a number of significant home video rumors that have been circulating over the past few days. I covered the status of the Star Trek: The Motion Picture – Director’s Edition remaster yesterday , so let’s move on to another title. Today I have an update for you on another of the rumors you’ve probably read about online: Warner Bros. Home Entertainment’s plans for The Middle Earth 4K Collection , the long-awaited release of Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit films on physical 4K Ultra HD. Here’s the latest from our sources... [Read on here...] You may have seen it reported that Warner Bros. currently plans to release The Middle Earth 4K Collection in October of this year. That information comes from two sources. First, the title has been listed in Warner’s internal rel...

The Goonies, Beetlejuice & Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes films are now official for 4K, plus Grant Imahara RIP

We’ve got still more release news to report today, though much if it we’ve already talked about here at The Bits . The point is, it’s all now official. First up, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has just set four catalog titles for release on 4K Ultra HD (with Blu-ray and Digital Copy) on 9/1... These include Richard Donner’s The Goonies (1985), Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice (1988), and Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes (2009) and Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (2011). All four were shot on film, so appear to have been mastered from new 4K scans of the original camera negatives (the two Sherlock Holmes titles were shot on film but finished as 2K DIs, so it’s possible new 4K DIs were built from scans of the camera neg and VFX film outs). All four titles will include the previous Blu-ray extras. In addition, Beetlejuice will offer a new English Dolby Atmos sound mix. There’s no indication of Dolby Vision HDR in Warner’s press release, so assume HDR10 for the time being. Both The Goo...

The Terror: Season 2, Arrow’s July slate, Little Monsters & Shivers from Lionsgate’s Vestron Video & more

We’ve got a quick update for you today, and then I’ll be back tomorrow with a long special feature piece here at The Bits . First though, we’ve got a couple of disc reviews as follows: Tim has just posted his thoughts on John Carpenter’s Escape from L.A.: Collector’s Edition on Blu-ray from Scream Factory . He’s also posted a review of Stephen Hopkins’ Judgment Night (1993) on Blu-ray from the Warner Archive Collection . And Dennis has taken a look at Michael Curtiz’s Romance on the High Seas on Blu-ray , also from the Warner Archive Collection. [Read on here...] In terms of announcement news, be sure to take a look at our Saturday post (if you haven’t already) which is an update on some breaking physical 4K Ultra HD catalog product that’s confirmed to be in the works for release later this year and into 2021. You’ll find that here. Meanwhile, Lionsgate has set The Terror: Infamy – The Complete Second Season for release on Blu-ray and DVD on 8/18 (SRP $27.99 and $21.98)...

Hitchcock, 300, V for Vendetta and more in our latest 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray update

Image
Heads-up, folks! This is just a quick news update (and a rare Saturday post) to let you all know that we’ve added or updated a number of titles in our 4K Ultra HD Release List here at The Digital Bits based on new information from our industry and retail sources. Specifically... Universal is apparently working on an Alfred Hitchcock 4K Collection that’s set to include Vertigo , Psycho , The Birds , and Rear Window . We’ve mentioned these titles before on The Bits , but European retail sources are now suggesting that they’ll arrive around September (and Psycho has just been listed on the Best Buy website). Also coming in September or October is the long awaited Back to the Future Trilogy: 35th Anniversary Edition Collection . [Read on here...] Meanwhile, director Edgar Wright has just confirmed that he’s working on a 4K release of Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (this year marks the film’s 10th anniversary). And we’ve gotten more word that David Lynch’s Dune and David Twohy’...
