Finding Ceiling joists?

Hi All,

I'm sure one of you handy people will know the answer to this.
I need to mount a heavy JVC on the ceiling. Previously I had a much lighter Panasonic.
I've been told to mount a piece of MDF first, to the joists and then attach the Peerless mount to that?
I bought some string magnets to try to find the plasterboard nails - Unsuccessfully I hasten to add.
My ceiling has the horrible stipple texture on it, so passing the magnets smoothly is hindered.
Is there a tried and tested method...

Hi, I'm new here. I've just sold my Arcam FMJ P7 to a great guy who is on these forums. So I now have my Arcam FMJ AV9 pre-amp to sell. This has been a great processor for me, and I can honestly be thankful to it for revealing subtle elements on recordings that no other pre-amp has given me.
