Sonos newer software

Very uneducated on this. Probably going to buy some sonos stuff.

With regards to the older s1 gen stuff, if this works ok now and works for a user, does that mean the s2 stuff doesn't matter? Or could a streaming service (spotify) for example,do an update and the s1 isn't compatible,then bye bye to your setup.
