Transferring data between ps4 issue

Trying to transfer data between my two ps4s because one has a broken disk drive. I can't update the software because of this so can't put save game data online. I was thinking of buying an external hardrive to transfer just the game data between the two. Can I still do this despite not having the software updated? Thanks in advance
