Strange HDMI problem

Firstly, apologies for the long explanation but I felt it important. I have been having problems with my TalkTalk YouView box for a while now. TalkTalk technical assistance is pretty useless so I have been doing some investigation so that I can ultimately tell them to replace the box or else. My only problem is that I have a large amount of recorded material on this box so I am loathe to lose it or have to do any factory reset.

Anyway, the problems began when the box started having trouble...
