Dance like nobody's watching! International Dance Day being celebrated today
It aims to bring people together with a common language - dance.
In 1982, the Dance Committee of International Theatre Institute founded International Dance Day to be celebrated every year on the 29 April, the birthday of Jean-Georges Noverre (1727-1810), creator of modern ballet.
Every year a message is given by a dancer to mark the day. This yera, Karima Mansour of Egypt has said: "Movement is a language spoken by us all. Movement is a universal language that belongs to everybody If only we open our senses and listen. Listening is what is required, listening without interference, listening without judgment, listening in silence and allowing the movement to pass through the body in the moment, because everything inside us and around us is in motion, constant motion. This is when the body doesn't lie because it is listening to its truth and manifesting it. By listening to our heartbeat, we can then dance the dance of life, which requires movement, agility and adaptability, a constant shifting choreography."
India has a plethora of classical and folk dances that are a visual treat to the audiences. Whether it is Kathak from Uttar Pradesh, Kathakali from Kerala or Sattariya from Assam, Chhau from Odisha and Kuchipudi from Andhra Pradesh, different dance forms have formed an integral part of expression in the Indian culthure and ethos.
Indian classical dance or Shastriya Nritya is rooted in religious musical theatre styles.
The Sangeet Natak Akademi recognizes eight classical dance forms – Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Kuchipudi, Odissi, Kathakali, Sattriya, Manipuri and Mohiniyattam.
The dances are traditionally regional, all of them include music and recitation in local language or Sanskrit, and they represent a unity of core ideas in a diversity of styles, costumes and expression.
