Buzzing sound from new Monitor speakers

Can anyone help ? I have a 24 year-old Technics midi system (50 watts per channel in old money). Today I upgraded the system by replacing the speakers with new Monitor Bronze 2 speakers. Unfortunately, when I connect the speaker cable to the left hand red and black sockets there is a very loud buzzing from the speaker. If the speaker doesn't buzz, the music has hardly any volume and sounds very distant.

After trying every combination of cable, socket and speaker, I'm satisfied that...
