Maldives Supreme Court clears way for Nasheed’s return

The court halted the conviction after the Prosecutor General requested the apex court to review verdict against him last Sunday.

The order requested state authorities not to take any action against Nasheed until it reviews his verdict as requested by the PG’s office.

The judgement comes two days before former President is to return to Male on Thursday.

Nasheed was convicted of terrorism charges and given a 13-year prison sentence in March, 2015 for arresting a Criminal Court Judge Abdulla during his regime.

Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) led by Mr Nasheed was instrumental in victory of Joint opposition candidate Ibrahim Mohamed Solih at the Presidential elections held in August.

Solih is scheduled to take over as new President on 17th of next month.

His victory against outgoing President Abdulla Yameen has led to dropping of charges against several opposition leaders and release from prison of former President Abdul Gayoom.
