Making use of a WiiU

i have one in the attic
Purchased new at launch and played for no more than five hours before being forgotten about all those years ago.

Now I have a friend who has three young girls and they have no gaming console so I’m wanting to pass it onto them. But what would I need to make it a viable family gaming console ?

Does it still work with wii hardware and software ?
If so I’m guessing I’d need a pair of controllers and nunchucks, can these be got cheap second hand ?
